In this article, I’ll show you how to curate the perfect combination of interior design ideas, colors, textures, and styles through the art of mood boarding.
So, grab your favorite drink, and find a cozy spot as together, we’ll make your dream forever home a visual masterpiece!
1. Define Your Style & Theme
Before we jump into creating your mood board, let’s first figure out your personal style and the theme you want for your dream home.
Are you into modern and minimalist vibes or do you prefer a warm and rustic feel? Maybe you’re dreaming of a coastal getaway or a vibrant city oasis.
Knowing your style and theme will give us a solid foundation for putting together your mood board.
2. Gather Inspiration
The next step is all about finding inspiration. Flip through interior design magazines, browse websites, scroll through social media, and, even take a stroll in nature to find things that inspire you.
Collect pictures, color swatches, fabric samples, and anything else that captures the essence of your dream home.
Don’t limit yourself to just interior design sources; draw inspiration from fashion, art, and nature too.
3. Choose a Platform
Now that you’ve gathered your inspiration, it’s time to pick a platform to create your mood board.
You can go old-school and create a physical board using cork or foam board where you can pin or glue your collected items. Or you can create a digital mood board using online tools and software.
There are some great platforms like Pinterest, Canva, and Adobe Spark that let you arrange and play with your design elements online.
Pick a platform that suits your style and gives you the flexibility to create your perfect mood board.
4. Arrange & Experiment
Once you have your platform set, it’s time to start arranging the items you’ve collected so far onto your mood board.
Begin with the bigger elements like furniture and architectural features, and then move on to the smaller details like fabrics and accessories.
Play around with different combinations and compositions to see what feels right.
Remember, this is a creative process, so feel free to experiment and make changes along the way.

Now that you have an actual board, let’s add some decor details to it…
5. Consider Color Palettes
Color is crucial when it comes to setting the mood and vibe of your dream home.
Choose a color palette that matches your style and theme.
Whether you’re all about bold and vibrant shades or you prefer soothing and neutral tones, make sure to incorporate them into your mood board so you can see how they work together.
Pay attention to the balance of colors and how they impact the overall look.
6. Focus on Textures & Patterns
Textures and patterns can add so much depth and visual interest to your interior design.
Think about different materials like wood, metal, glass, and fabric, and the textures they bring.
Look for patterns that go well with your chosen style, whether they’re geometric, floral, or something totally abstract.
Including samples or images of these textures and patterns on your mood board will help you visualize how they fit into your design scheme.
7. Capture the Lighting
Lighting is a game-changer when it comes to interior design. It can totally transform the ambiance of a space.
Consider the natural light sources in your dream home and how they interact with artificial lighting fixtures.
Add images that show different lighting options like pendant lights, floor lamps, or wall sconces.
Take note of the color temperature of the lighting and how it affects the overall mood.
Pro-tip: This is also a good time to think about what architectural elements, furniture, accessories and decor items you would like to incorporate into your design. Make a note of them in your worksheet (you can download it by clicking HERE). This worksheet will be invaluable when it comes time to talk to your builder.
8. Refine and Edit
Once you’re done putting together your mood board, take a step back and look at the overall composition.
Do the elements work well together? Do they reflect your vision for your dream home?
Go ahead and edit and refine your mood board by removing anything that doesn’t match your style or theme.
Make sure your final mood board truly captures the atmosphere and aesthetic you desire.
9. Add Finishing Touches
When your design is complete, it’s time to add some finishing touches to your mood board.
Consider adding decorative trim or ribbon to give it that extra flair.
You can also add notes or labels to help you remember what each piece represents.
When you look at your mood board from a distance, it’s easier to make sure the overall design looks balanced and cohesive.
Creating a mood board is a fantastic way to visualize your dream home.
It lets you explore different interior design elements, play with color schemes, and create a vision for your space that makes sense.
By following these steps, you’ll be able to create a mood board that truly reflects your personal style and helps you bring your dream home to life.
