READY TO TALK ABOUT YOUR PROJECT?

If you’re thinking about renovating your kitchen, there are some key decisions you need to make before you get started. Trust me, a well thought-out plan is necessary for any kitchen design project to be successful, but if you “don’t know what you don’t know”, it can quickly become an overwhelming process!

No worries, we’re here to help! In this blog, we’ll guide you through 5 key decisions that you need to make before you hire a kitchen designer, renovation company or pick up your hammer to DIY.

So let’s get started!

“Kitchens should be designed around what’s truly important – fun, food, and life.”

– Daniel Boulud –

1. Budget

Before you start designing your dream kitchen, you need to figure out how much you’re willing to spend. It’s important to set a realistic budget that takes into account the cost of materials, labor, and any unexpected expenses that may arise during the kitchen reno project.

Having a clear understanding of how much money you have to work with now, will avoid a lot of stress later.

2. Kitchen Layout

The layout of your kitchen is crucial to its functionality. You’ll want to consider things like the size and shape of your space, the location of your appliances, and the flow of traffic in the room. Think about what works best for you and your family, and don’t be afraid to get creative with your layout.

Keep in mind how you use your kitchen.  Do you entertain a lot? Is your family busy during the week with lots of activities?  Write down all of ways you use the kitchen including what currently works and what doesn’t work.

3. Your Style

Your kitchen should reflect your personal style and taste. Consider things like color, the materials you like (wood, natural stone etc.), and the overall aesthetic and feel you want to achieve when choosing your design elements.

Whether you prefer a modern, minimalist look or a cozy, traditional feel, make sure your design choices align with your vision for the space.

If you’re not sure what your style is, look at some kitchen design magazines and cut out the pictures you like.  Pinterest is also a wonderful tool to find kitchen designs you love. A designer can also help you figure out the perfect style for your new kitchen (check out my DESIGN JUMPSTART Service HERE).   My best advice though is don’t pick anything “trendy”, unless you absolutely LOVE the trend.  Trends come and go, and you want to love your new kitchen for a long time!

4. Lighting

The right lighting is crucial in any kitchen design so consider both natural and artificial light sources when planning your new kitchen design.

Note where your windows are located, and make sure you have adequate overhead and task lighting to ensure a bright and functional space.

When it comes to lighting, there are hundreds of different styles to choose from. From ceiling mounted, wall mounted, recessed and LED’s, you’ll find something to fit your budget.

Pro Tip:  When it comes to kitchen lighting, choose quality fixtures and have them installed by a professional so that they will last a lifetime.

5. Preparation

Begin to prepare for your project by clearing out the existing kitchen and ensure that all appliances and fixtures are properly disconnected before the renovation begins.

Find a convenient living area that is separate from the kitchen for both safety reasons and so that everyone can stay out of the way of the contractors and their crew.  Also, set up a temporary kitchen in another room in the house so that everyone can prepare easy meals and snacks.

Try to schedule your project in the warmer months so that you can cook and eat outside.  Also, buy a good supply of paper plates!
